What do we talk about?
The show is for GenXer’s who have stories where they found meaning, experienced personal or professional growth, or perhaps even a life crisis while moving from “Vroom Vroom” mode to “Veer” mode.
What do you mean by “Vroom Vroom” mode?
Without judgement, this is the part of our lives on “fast forward”—the decision was made and we are moving down the road at cruising speed. Think about this as a straight away on a race track…you can afford to open up the gas here.
Examples:
You decide to go back to school and finish your graduate degree…you set it all up and then take your first class…then you get up to speed and start moving toward a goal…
You take on a short term gig overseas for work or adventure…it has a start date, a middle and a definite end point in time…in the middle you are in vroom vroom mode…focused on getting things done.
It can also relate to periods of “just living”. I have a job, a spouse, some kids and a mortgage…when will this change? When the nest is empty for sure. When the mortgage is paid off? Maybe.
What is a Veer?
A “veer” means a change was on the horizon…a job change, a military retirement, a graduation, an empty nest, a health issue…
Sometimes we see the Veer coming on the horizon and we intentionally slow down and carefully negotiate the course correction.
Other times, we don’t see the veer coming until a “crisis” is unavoidable…that obstacle is there and we need to do something about it…but we are still moving so fast…we might “veer” out of control, we might crash!
Why talk about it?
By reliving stories of moving from Vroom Vroom mode to Veer mode, we can see there are patterns that arise to warn us to slow down.
One of my past podcast guests called these “taps” from God…little warnings that he should slow down and check the horizon.
Jim was in Vroom Vroom mode and doing well…making great money, had a great family, and was doing great…
…then there was a soft voice pulling him toward starting his own business…but he was afraid to make the move and leave the security of the steady pay check…he ignored tap #1.
The taps continue…gentle as first, and increasing in volume…he’s now not so happy with work…but he’s not yet ready to take the leap of faith.
Then comes crisis #1, Jim is fired, down sized…ouch.
As if that weren’t enough, crisis #2 Jim gets cancer…ouch X2.
This is enough now, Jim gets it…beats cancer, and starts his own businesses…and crushes it.
How can we see the “VEER” coming before the crisis?
This is never 100% but we can slow down our vroom vroom mode in many ways to practice slowing down to check the horizon every once in a while…
We can share stories about how other people in mid-life negotiated their own transitions…did they see that veer coming and slow down…or did they veer out of control, or god forbid, did they crash into a life crisis.
Do you have about 3 examples from your life of transitions from Vroom Vroom to Veer?
Maybe you have one long story that was many transitions…or maybe you have 3 or more “mini” veers.
Stories vs Generalizations
The show uses storytelling to really convey a sense of building action
- Where were you?
- Were you married, single, divorced?
- What was your job?
- Setup the the Vroom Vroom mode in “vivid detail”
- Where you moving at warp speed? Cruising speed? What did you have on your plate?
- How was your health?
- THEN…the VEER
- Did you see it coming?
- Did you slow down?
- Did you veer out of control?
- Did you (God forbid) Crash?
- Resolution: How did you fair?
- What did you lose?
- What did you have to overcome?
- What did you learn?
- Were there “taps” or warning signs you that you missed?
- Is there a silver lining? Is there a blessing in disguise?
